Gaza’s indestructible spirit: ‘80% of Khan Younis destroyed, yet hope prevails’
Many Palestinians are returning to their homes in Gaza after fleeing Israel’s recent attacks in Rafah. In Khan Younis, they find near-total destruction, with 80% of buildings destroyed following the Israeli forces’ withdrawal in April. Bisan Owda, a Gaza-based video journalist, is documenting the widespread devastation, questioning who will repair and rebuild the area. Despite safety concerns, people are setting up tents and searching for anything salvageable. Owda notes remnants of an Israeli sniper’s position and American-marked bullet casings. Amid the ruins, hope persists as a destroyed shopping centre hosts a small stand selling juice and water, symbolising the resilience of the Palestinian people as they strive to rebuild Gaza.
