Bolivia’s political crisis: Morales supporters march to La Paz, clashing with Arce’s loyalists

After a week of marching through Bolivia, former President Evo Morales and thousands of his supporters reached La Paz on Monday to protest against the government of current President Luis Arce and the country’s economic decline. This event highlights the deep schism in Bolivia’s leftist politics, pitting former allies against each other. On Sunday, clashes erupted in El Alto as Morales’s supporters and Arce’s loyalists hurled firecrackers and stones at each other, prompting riot police to use tear gas. Tensions have escalated since late 2021 as both leaders vie for control of the socialist party and the presidential candidacy for the upcoming elections. In a televised address, Arce accused Morales of attempting a coup. The ongoing conflict threatens Bolivia’s stability amid a significant US dollar shortage.
