Recognising Palestine statehood: Diplomatic shifts against the backdrop of war
The devastation in the Gaza Strip over the past 12 months has galvanised hundreds of thousands of people around the world to take a stand and demand a ceasefire.
In the first month of the war, 4,200 protests were recorded globally.
The majority of them, more than 3,700, were against Israel’s war.
At least 520 were in support of Israel.
Some of the largest demonstrations in solidarity with Palestinians, and in condemnation of Israel’s military assault on Gaza were held in the United States, United Kingdom and Yemen.
The war also put Palestinian rights back in the spotlight.
In May, Norway, Ireland and Spain recognised Palestine as an independent state based on the pre-1967 borders with occupied East Jerusalem as its capital.
A few days later, Slovenia followed suit.
