A study from Hungary reveals that the brains of domestic dogs are significantly smaller than their wild ancestors, like wolves, due to domestication. Living in simpler environments, domestic dogs face fewer cognitive challenges, leading to a gradual reduction in brain size over time. Researchers analyzed 25 canid species and found substantial brain shrinkage in dogs compared to wild canids. The study also highlighted the common raccoon dog, which hibernates, as having an unusually small brain for its body size.
