After a period of political maneuvering, Pakistan’s National Assembly passed the contentious 26th Constitution Amendment Bill at 5 AM on Monday, limiting the chief justice’s tenure to three years. Known as the Constitutional Package, this amendment seeks to curtail the powers of the independent judiciary. The bill was approved with a two-thirds majority, receiving 255 votes out of 366, while the government needed 224 votes for its passage, as reported by The Dawn.
