US Secretary of State Antony Blinken lands in Israel for new Gaza ceasefire push
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has arrived in Israel for a week-long tour of the Middle East, aimed at reviving Gaza ceasefire talks.
He’s expected to discuss an end to the war, aid and post-war planning with leaders from Israel, Jordan and Qatar.
Blinken’s trip comes just days after the Israeli military killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.
The US says Sinwar’s death presents an opportunity to negotiate the release of Israeli captives held in Gaza.
Al Jazeera’s Mohammed Jamjoom has more from Jordan’s capital, Amman, because the Israeli government has banned Al Jazeera from reporting inside Israel and in the occupied West Bank.
Former Israeli Justice Minister Yossi Beilin says he hopes Antony Blinken’s trip to Israel will at least “contribute to the option of a ceasefire”.
