Biden ‘growing isolated, not carrying the party’
Marc Owen Jones, associate professor of Middle East Studies at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, says that USAID chief Samantha Power’s comments on famine already taking place in northern Gaza show the increasing rift within US policy circles.
Power is the highest-ranking US official to acknowledge the level of hunger in the Strip. Yet, the White House took a softer stance saying that famine was “imminent”.
Owen Jones told Al Jazeera this was “just another indication” that US President Joe Biden is increasingly isolating himself both within his own administrations and “from what his own constituents want” ahead of the US presidential election in November.
“What Biden is doing is not carrying the party with him and he is in danger of isolating his other allies in the region, including Jordan and the Gulf states,” Owen Jones said.
