Chance of Gaza ceasefire deal ‘almost non-existent’: Analysis

Dov Waxman, a Professor of Israel Studies and Political Science at UCLA, stated that Prime Minister Netanyahu’s public apology following the discovery of six Israeli captives’ bodies in Gaza is unlikely to make a difference. According to Waxman, the apology will not sway the Israelis demanding a ceasefire, particularly the families of the hostages. He believes Netanyahu’s press conference might only intensify pressure on him to reach a deal, though Netanyahu appears unwilling to negotiate on known terms. Waxman also remarked that the prospects for a ceasefire deal seem nearly non-existent, given the lack of pressure on Netanyahu and Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. He noted that recent mixed messages from President Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken have further complicated the situation. Waxman emphasised that the failure to reach an agreement could escalate tensions, potentially involving other groups like Hezbollah.
