Colombia land invasion: Thousands face eviction for illegal occupation

Wooden shacks cover the 378 hectares of the Santa Helena ranch, currently Colombia’s largest land invasion. In the past two months, about 7,000 families have occupied this property near Caucasia, driven by homelessness and unaffordable rents. The first 200 families arrived in late March, seeking refuge due to a lack of opportunities. The situation escalated after President Gustavo Petro’s promise to purchase land for the invaders, led to further occupation. The ranch, once owned by a convicted drug trafficker, is embroiled in a decade-long legal battle, highlighting Colombia’s severe land inequality issues.

Al Jazeera’s Alessandro Rampietti reports from the town of Caucasia, Colombia.
