First Ever Map of Ancient Underwater Avalanche | WION Podcast

Researchers from the University of Liverpool have mapped an ancient, massive underwater avalanche that occurred 60,000 years ago off the Northwest coast of Africa. Initially starting as a small landslide, it rapidly grew to reach heights of 200 meters and speeds of 64 km/h, carving the Agadir Canyon and eroding 4,500 square kilometers of seafloor. This event, which buried a vast area under sediment, challenges prior understanding that only large slope failures could trigger such massive avalanches. The findings offer new insights into the dynamics of submarine avalanches and their growth potential.
