German border controls: Germany toughens approach on immigration
Germany recently reintroduced temporary controls on its land borders.
Ministers said this was part of a toughening of their approach to immigration, but many felt it was a response to the rising popularity of the far-right, anti-migrant AfD party.
The move angered some of Germany’s neighbours and raised questions about the future of the EU’s borderless Schengen Zone.
