Global nuclear arsenal trends troubling amid geopolitical tensions: SIPRI report
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) annual report highlights troubling nuclear trends. While global nuclear weapons have fallen to 12,121, with Russia and the U.S. holding nearly 90%, over 3,900 are operational and many are on high alert. China’s arsenal grew by 20%, with missiles ready to launch instantly. India, Pakistan, and North Korea are advancing missile technology. Israel is modernising its nuclear capabilities, and several countries are developing tactical nuclear warheads. SIPRI notes a rising reliance on nuclear deterrence in 2024.
