Greece: Asylum seekers face challenges as Germany tightens border controls amid rising applications
Asylum seekers in Greece face significant challenges amid rising applications, which have doubled since 2020, exceeding one million. Many at the Malakasa camp hope to relocate to Germany for safety, but new German border controls complicate this desire. Germany has begun threatening deportations for migrants who have previously received asylum in other EU countries. Since initially welcoming 800,000 refugees, Germany has shifted its approach, attempting to limit migration. Concerns arise that these actions could undermine the EU’s open border policy. Greek officials warn that such measures risk destabilising the Schengen area. The need for cooperation among EU nations is increasingly urgent.
