Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst Marwan Bishara discussed the heart-wrenching tragic stories un-folding in Gaza over the past three or four months, emphasizing their significance beyond legal and military terminology. He contended that these narratives, particularly those involving children, surpass the judgment of judges, journalists, or academics, serving as a poignant reminder of the true human cost. Bishara characterized the situation as an unraveling genocide, attributing it not only to widespread suffering, destruction, and collective punishment but also to a determined effort by a specific country to inflict such suffering on the people of Gaza.
He drew attention to a pivotal moment, noting the impending release of the International Court of Justice’s provisional ruling on Friday, suggesting its potential impact on public opinion. Bishara underscored the ongoing accumulation of tragic stories in Gaza, extending beyond recent events and encompassing issues such as diseases, a crumbling health infrastructure, civic breakdown, sanitation problems, and starvation. He reported an escalation in bombings in the southern part of Gaza, highlighting the destruction already witnessed in the north.
Bishara expressed concern over the prevailing Israeli public opinion, citing a Tel Aviv University poll indicating that a significant majority of Israeli Jews view the use of force as appropriate and justify the destruction and suffering in Gaza. He emphasized that this support is not limited to political figures but extends to the broader Israeli public, with a notable percentage expressing a desire to illegally resettle the Gaza Strip. Bishara urged the judges of the International Court of Justice to consider the unfolding tragedy in Gaza, aligning it with the sentiments expressed by the UN Secretary General regarding the need for a ceasefire to facilitate humanitarian aid delivery.
