Israeli cabinet in disarray over Gaza strategy: Marwan Bishara

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly been discussing plans for ‘what happens next’ after the war on Gaza is over.
Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst Marwan Bishara discussed the leaked remarks from Benjamin Netanyahu, suggesting unrest and disagreement within the Israeli government. He highlighted that Israel appears to be at an ‘inflection point’, torn between prioritizing captives or defeating Hamas, and continuing war or exploring diplomatic avenues, all of which is potentially damaging to Netanyahu politically. Additionally, he suggested that the difference in casualty counts offered by Israeli hospitals and the Israeli army is revealing an unpopular government in crisis. Bishara argued that international pressure is closing the window for Israel’s bombardment strategy, compounded by the economic costs which are purportedly escalating to a quarter of a billion dollars a day. Further, Bishara predicted an increase in civilian deaths due to the intensified Israeli bombardment. He cast doubt on the Israeli military’s ‘progress’ claims in the fight against Hamas, arguing that despite their superior firepower, Israel is losing the war strategically. On the Lebanese-Israeli border clashes, Bishara noted they seem to be contained for now, but cautioned any miscalculation could trigger a wider conflict.
