Israel’s war on Gaza triggers major cash shortage as banks and ATMs are destroyed
In Gaza’s cash-based economy, withdrawing money has become crucial amid the ongoing war. The military’s destruction of most banks has left people relying on costly makeshift ATMs and dealing with a shortage of usable banknotes. The need for hard currency has surged, particularly since Israel’s May offensive, which cut off aid and displaced many. Prices for essentials have risen sharply, worsening the economic strain. With no functional ATMs and continued Israeli restrictions, financial recovery seems increasingly distant for Gaza’s residents.
Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum reports from Deir el-Balah in Central Gaza.
