Netanyahu stoking regional tensions to ‘delay political reckoning’: Jordanian FM
Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi tells Al Jazeera that Israel’s war on Gaza could lead to a wider conflict.
The attacks in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon come as Israel continues to bomb the Gaza strip – sparking fears that the war could lead to a regional conflict.
Here are some of his main points:
• We warned from the very beginning that this aggression on Gaza carries the very serious risk of spilling over into the rest of the region.
• The Israeli prime minister might be consciously provoking confrontations on other fronts, particularly with Lebanon and other parts of the region, to delay the political reckoning that he will have to face.
• Netanyahu might be dragging the West (into the war) and then we’ll be looking at a very serious escalation.
• We (Arab states) are doing everything we can but ultimately it is the Israeli government that is defying, not just the will of the Arabs, but the will of the whole international community when it continues with its aggression.
• We are working with all our partners. I’ll be visiting all the European foreign ministers and foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Egypt to try again to rally support, not only for ending the aggression, but to make sure that we all come together behind a plan that would end the occupation.
