‘Nothing will be decided’ in Gantz’s Washington meetings: analysis

While Benny Gantz’s visit to the US may improve his domestic political standing and position him as a future alternative to Netanyahu, it will have no impact on changing the course of the war, says Israeli political analyst Gideon Levy.
“Gantz has very little influence on the government. On questions of continuing or not continuing the war, Netanyahu is the only one who decides,” Levy told Al Jazeera.
“The Americans can only really increase Gantz’s domestic power, which is not enough to change the war,” he said, even if Gantz has the best chance of becoming Israel’s next prime minister. “Nothing will be decided in Gantz’s meetings in Washington.”
There are divisions in Israel within the war cabinet over how to negotiate with Hamas, with Netanyahu taking a more hawkish line, but there is unanimity on the need to continue the war, added Levy.
“Nobody in the cabinet wants to see an end to the war right now,” he said. “The cabinet is divided over how flexible Israel should be, but only regarding a possible pause in the fighting, or a hostage deal, not about ending the war.”
