Rising online scams ruining lives
Last year, the FBI estimates, online scams run out of Southeast Asia stole nearly $4 billion from tens of thousands of Americans, a 53% increase from the year before. There are countless victims of this massive global criminal operation predominantly run by Chinese gangs who have built a multibillion-dollar scam industry using an army of scammers in Southeast Asia, many held against their will in guarded compounds and forced to con people all around the world out of their life savings. CNN’s Ivan Watson investigates the devastating consequences – including, in some cases, suicide – of this practice, known as “pig-butchering.”
