Trophy hunting is driving Kenya’s super tusker elephants towards extinction at the Tanzania border

Craig, a super tusker in Kenya’s Amboseli National Park, is one of the most photographed elephants. With fewer than 30 super tuskers left, researchers aim to protect them by fitting tracking collars on 11 elephants. However, some bulls are still vulnerable when they cross into Tanzania, where trophy hunting is legal. Five bulls have been killed recently, raising concerns about the sustainability of hunting practices. Despite Tanzania’s claims to regulate trophy hunts, conservationists warn that the loss of big males threatens the elephant population.

Al Jazeera’s Catherine Soi reports from Amboseli National Park, in southern Kenya.
