Uganda reparations: Court orders Dominic Ongwen to pay $56M to victims

Court orders Ongwen to pay $56M to victims
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has ordered Dominic Ongwen, a former commander of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), to pay $56 million in reparations to victims of his crimes. Ongwen was found guilty earlier for his role in numerous atrocities committed by the LRA, including murder, enslavement, and forced marriage.

The court’s decision to order reparations underscores its commitment to addressing the harm inflicted upon victims and providing them with a measure of justice. The $56 million will go towards compensating those who suffered as a result of Ongwen’s actions, including survivors and families of the deceased.

However, questions remain about Ongwen’s ability to pay such a significant sum, given his status as a former rebel commander. Efforts to enforce the court’s order and ensure that victims receive the compensation they are owed may prove challenging.

Despite these challenges, the ruling represents an important step towards accountability for perpetrators of grave crimes and towards providing support and redress for their victims.
