UN court hears arguments on illegality of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories
UN court heard Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine. Most want equal treatment for Palestinians. During the three-day hearing, countries from around the world argued that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories is illegal. However, the US argued that any movement towards Israel’s withdrawal from the West Bank and Gaza must consider Israel’s security needs. The Palestinian foreign minister dismissed this argument, stating that the US cannot perform in the same way they have in the United Nations system. Russia, a longtime Israeli ally, also participated in the case, saying the occupation is illegal and should stop. The judges heard a vast majority of the countries want Palestinian people to be treated equally before the law and Israel to be held accountable.
