West Bengal jute industry crisis: Unemployment major concern among voters
The Indian state of West Bengal is a hub for the production of jute, a plant fiber that can be spun into strong, coarse threads. But factories are operating at a loss because of a drop in demand. They’ve cut jobs, and the rise in unemployment has become an election campaign issue. Voters from parts of the state will cast their ballots in the fifth phase of the general elections on May 20th. As a reminder, the Indian government has not granted visas to Al Jazeera’s journalists, so we are covering the election from out-side the country.
