Why I’m protesting against my Israeli government | Close Up

31-year-old Israeli activist Gil Dickmann is demanding his government rethink its war on Gaza. He believes a deal with Hamas is the only way to end the killing and bring Israeli captives back home.

For Dickmann, the situation is personal. On October 7, his aunt, Kinneret Gat, was killed in Kibbutz Be’eri, and his cousin, Carmel Gat, is believed to be held captive by Hamas.

Israel’s six months of war has destroyed most of Gaza’s infrastructure, starved its civilian population and killed more than 33,000 people, most of them women and children.

This Close Up film provides a firsthand look inside a deeply divided society, as a growing number of Israelis are furious that their government seems intent on revenge rather than delivering on its promised aims.
